Even though we’re just at the end of October, winter isn’t far away and we can already feel the chilly air in the Spokane Valley area. And while spring cleaning might be more of a catchphrase than winter cleaning, it’s still just as important. To help maintain your home and get it ready for the colder months, here are some professional tips from White Glove Cleaning service. If you would rather spend time jumping in beautiful fall leaves than cleaning all weekend, be sure to give us a call to schedule an appointment.
Replace Air Filters and Clean the Furnace
When was the last time you replaced your air filters? The EPA recommends switching them out every three months to keep the air in your home healthy and clean from dust and other tiny particles. For additional cleaning, whenever you do replace the filters, remove the vent covers and soak them in water to remove all of the accumulated dust. Keep an eye on your furnace as well, if the burner flame is yellow rather than blue, it might be time to replace it.
Refrigerator Coils
There are some obvious things that can raise your utility bills, like drafty windows, but did you know that dirty refrigerator coils can do the same thing? Unplug the fridge and pull it away from the wall to find the coils, which will either be on the bottom or at the back of the unit. Use a coil brush or a sturdy vacuum attachment to remove any dirt, dust, and stubborn debris. Be sure to vacuum the floor while you have access.
Remove Clutter
Not only will clear surfaces make it easier for a cleaning service to clean, it means fewer items can gather dust. If there is a pile of toys in the living room, a stack of books on the coffee table, or any unused electronics sitting on the entertainment center, find a place to put them where they can be out of the way. Any items that you haven’t used in more than three to four months can also be donated to a thrift store.
Empty the Dryer Vents
Lint trapped in the dryer vents can be a fire hazard, especially in the cold, dry months of winter. Pull the dryer away from the wall and disconnect the pipe to clean out the outlet hole and the pipe itself. To clean the vents, use a vacuum or a vent snake that will remove any lint. Once the dryer has been plugged back in, run it empty once to trap any remaining lint.
Kitchen Deep Clean
Before any major holiday parties are planned, go through your kitchen and give the cabinets and drawers a deep clean. This is also a great opportunity to get rid of any excess clutter that has accumulated over the summer. You can give much of the deep cleaning that can be done in the kitchen to our cleaning service, including reaching the far corners of the floor under the cabinets or any window sills.
It may not the be the most fun chore, but giving your home and some appliances a deep clean can ensure that the air is clean and everything is functioning as it should. We understand that you will want to enjoy any warm days left outside, so if you need any help with your household cleaning, give us a call and we’ll come take over.
